Prescriptions at Close Farm Surgery

You can order an NHS repeat prescription from your pharmacy by using the NHS app or our online system.

Find out how to get a repeat prescription online, how much prescriptions cost and how your local pharmacist can help you without having to see your GP.

Repeat prescriptions

The doctor may prescribe some medicines on a repeat prescription, and will then review your medication at regular intervals.

If you have been given a repeat medication, you can re-order it by either:-

  • Downloading and using the free NHS app
  • Leave the computer printout request or a written request in the request box which can be found on the wall in our porch giving details of the medication you require
  • Using our online system

Please allow at least 72 working hours notice for repeat prescriptions and longer if this includes weekends and bank holidays.

All prescriptions will be sent electronically to the chemist of your choice.  Please can you ensure that we have your nominated pharmacy on record if you are requesting medication.

In order to avoid any mistakes being made with repeat prescriptions we can only accept a computer slip or a written request.  We cannot accept requests for repeat prescriptions by telephone.

We are a ‘Part Dispensing’ Practice. We are allowed to dispense medicines directly to our patients who live over a mile as the crow flies from a Chemist, and for those who satisfy NHS criteria for acceptance onto our dispensing list. Further information is available from the receptionists or the dispenser.

Do you pay for your prescriptions ?

If you do not qualify for free prescriptions, a “season ticket” (NHS Prepayment Certificate) may save you money.

If you need more than five items during four months, or more than fourteen items during one year, you will save money by buying one.

Details of how to obtain one are available at the Dispensary or any Pharmacist.

Prescription charges and exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

Nominating a pharmacy

When you order a repeat prescription online, you will have to nominate a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and for you to pick it up from.

You can nominate a pharmacy by using the NHS App or logging into the NHS website using a web browser. A high street pharmacy is where you collect your prescriptions in person. If you have chosen an online-only pharmacy, then they will send your prescription in the post.

If you order your prescription online:

  • You will no longer need to collect paper prescriptions from our surgery.
  • Your nominated pharmacy will have your prescriptions ready to collect until you change or remove them.

For more information about nominating a pharmacy, visit the Nominate a Pharmacy page on the NHS website.

How your pharmacy can help

Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals who can help you with minor health concerns. They can offer medical advice and over-the-counter medicines for minor illnesses like coughs, colds, tummy problems and aches and pains.

For symptoms that are more serious, we suggest visiting your GP or nurse. You can book an appointment by going to our Appointments page.

Prescription charges

The NHS prescription charges apply to England only.

The Government provides help for those who have difficulty paying NHS prescriptions. You can find out more about whether you’re entitled to support from the Government on the NHS Prescription charges page on the NHS website.

More information and advice about NHS England prescription charges are on the Who can get a free prescription page on the NHS website.
